Keystage 3/4 Teacher - Maths Lead

Educate U is an independent specialist school providing high quality education for children and young people aged 5 -16 with a wide range of complex needs. These needs include children diagnosed with ASC, ADHD or who have high anxiety and attachment and trauma barriers to learning. All our students have an EHCP. The post of SEN Class Teacher plays a key part in this provision through a commitment to the school’s ethos, by working effectively across subject and pastoral teams and by delivering high standards of teaching and learning.

Job Description:

We are seeking an innovative, experienced, and nurturing KS3/KS4 SEND teacher to join our school on a 12-month fixed-term contract covering maternity leave, with the potential of becoming a permanent role with our growing team. You will work with a small class of pupils whose needs include ASC, ADHD, high anxiety, and attachment or trauma-related barriers to learning. All our students have an EHCP, and most have SEMH needs.

The Role

As a SEND Teacher, you will provide high-quality, specialist teaching for KS3 and KS4 pupils with a range of neurodiverse and SEMH needs. You will develop a stimulating and supportive learning environment, delivering a bespoke, topic-based curriculum that meets pupils’ academic, social, and personal development needs.

In addition to classroom teaching, you will lead Maths across the school, supporting staff with planning, assessment, and progression, and contribute to whole-school development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan and deliver differentiated, high-quality lessons for KS3 and KS4 SEN pupils
  • Promote academic progress and emotional development through assessment and feedback
  • Develop a bespoke curriculum covering Maths, Literacy, PSHE, and enrichment
  • Maintain a nurturing and structured classroom environment, implementing PACE strategies
  • Support pupils’ personal and social development alongside academic learning

Leadership and Coordination

  • Lead the Maths curriculum across the school, ensuring sequential planning and high standards
  • Line manage Teaching Assistants within the classroom, deploying support effectively
  • Support the SENCO in producing and reviewing EHCPs and support plans
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, behaviour, and learning
  • Ensure the physical classroom environment is well-organised and promotes learning

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Build positive relationships with parents, carers, and external professionals (e.g., social care, NHS, CAMHS, EPs)
  • Liaise with other agencies to support pupils’ needs
  • Contribute to departmental and whole-school improvement initiatives

Safeguarding

  • Promote and actively support the school’s safeguarding responsibilities
  • Attend safeguarding training and report concerns promptly to the DSL/DDSL

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in professional development, performance review, and school development
  • Manage a delegated budget for learning resources and classroom equipment
  • Undertake other tasks as required to meet the needs of pupils

Person Specification

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a qualified teacher with experience of teaching SEN pupils with complex needs
  • Have experience of working in an SEMH setting
  • Have experience teaching pupils with ASC, ADHD, and Tourette’s Syndrome
  • Demonstrate strong subject knowledge in Mathematics and the ability to lead Maths across the school
  • Be able to plan and deliver highly differentiated lessons
  • Understand trauma-informed and PACE-based approaches
  • Be skilled in working collaboratively with staff, parents, and external agencies
  • Have excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Be resilient, flexible, and able to adapt to the needs of the school and pupils

Working Hours: 37 hour week: Monday to Thursday 08.45 – 16.15, Friday 08.45 to 15.45pm. Term Time only.

Main Duties

· Promote and actively support the school’s responsibilities towards safeguarding. Safeguarding is about keeping people safe and protecting people from harm, neglect, abuse and injury. It is about creating safe places, being vigilant and doing something about any concerns you might have. It isn’t just about the very old and the very young, it is about everyone who may be vulnerable.

· Effective safeguarding of all students and recording of safeguarding concerns onto MyConcern.

Leadership

· Leading your team of TAs and completing termly performance management meetings with them.

· Encourage all members of staff to recognise and fulfil their statutory responsibilities to students with SEN

· Support training opportunities for TAs and other teachers to learn about SEN / SEN provision.

· Disseminate good practice in SEN across your team.

Teaching and Learning

· Carry out teaching duties in accordance with the school’s Schemes of Work, the National Curriculum and public examinations specifications

· Plan and deliver lessons and other learning activities in accordance with the school’s Teaching and Learning Policy, ensuring that all students make progress towards clear learning objectives.

· Lead on two separate subjects across the school from EYFS to KS4 if applicable. This means that you will support the planning and resourcing of these subjects and the training of other teachers to deliver the content that you have planned.

· Identify resources needed to meet the needs of students with SEN and advise the Head teacher of priorities for expenditure

· Liaise with other colleagues to prepare and deliver units of learning in a collaborative way (the contribution reflecting the post holder’s level of responsibility)

· Work closely with teachers and learning support assistants in ensuring that suitably differentiated material and learning pathways are provided to challenge all students regardless of ability

· Use the ‘Assess, Plan, Do, Review’ monitoring cycle to review where your subject and students and to review progress made.

· Set appropriately aspirational targets for student attainment based on prior data

· Set work for students absent from lessons in line with school policies.

· Identify and adopt the most effective teaching approaches for students with SEN so as to provide consistently high quality teaching

· Monitor teaching and learning activities to meet the needs of students with SEN

· Identify and teach study skills that will develop students' ability to work independently

· Liaise with other schools to ensure continuity of support and learning when transferring students with SEN

· Plan and deliver effective sessions for small groups of students with SEN and 1:1 sessions for students with significant SEN

· To include literacy, numeracy and PSHE cross curriciular links throughout your planned subject lead lessons.

· Plan trips for your class and complete risk assessments with guidance from the EVC.

Assessment, Recording & Reporting

· Maintain rigorous and accurate records, including students’ attainment, attendance, home learning set and outline lesson plans All data should be centralised on BROMCOM.

· Assess and return work on a regular basis. Marking and/or verbal feedback should include feedback for improvement and progress for each student

· Provide assessment reports when required within the school’s assessment cycle and additional “round robin” reports when specifically requested.

· Assist the Head teacher and senior leadership team in carrying out suitable evaluation and analysis of examination results and performance at the beginning of the academic year and agreeing actions as necessary.

· Liaise in a timely way with individual parents on students’ progress as necessary and reasonable, including attendance at consultation evenings.

· Work within the code of practice relating to Disability and Special Educational Needs.

· Set targets for raising achievement among students with SEN

· Collect and interpret specialist assessment data

· Support systems for identifying, assessing and reviewing SEN

· Liaise effectively with and signpost to other agencies when necessary, for example, social care, NHS, CAMHS, EPs etc.

· Attend IEP days and keep parents informed about their child's progress.
